Audit: Eddington "Confirmation"

If you look hard enough, you find what you are looking for

The 1919 solar eclipse expeditions to Sobral and Príncipe are heralded as the "experimental proof" of General Relativity. Forensic analysis of the bench notes reveals a chaotic data set, significant instrumental drift, and the selective discarding of results that supported the Newtonian model. This was not a verification; it was a coronation.

The Bamboozle

Eddington and his team faced three possible outcomes for the deflection of starlight (\(\theta\)):

The Sobral expedition produced plates showing \(\sim 0.93''\)—nearly a perfect match for the Newtonian model. Eddington labeled these as "unreliable" due to temperature-induced focus shifts and discarded them, keeping only the Príncipe plates that hovered near the Einsteinian prediction.

The Evidence

The systematic error of the telescopes, caused by the extreme temperature fluctuations of the tropical environment, was often larger than the effect being measured. The claimed result of \(1.61 \pm 0.30''\) was "extracted" from a noisy background that any modern peer review would reject as inconclusive.

The deflection was modeled using the geometric coefficient:

\[ \theta = \frac{4GM}{rc^2} \]

By forcing the data into this purely geometric box, Eddington ignored the physical presence of the Solar Corona—a plasma-rich medium capable of refractive bending.

Eddington didn't go to the tropics to test a theory; he went to find a specific number. When the equipment disagreed with the "boss," he blamed the equipment. If an engineer "selected" data this way during a load test, the bridge would collapse.

The Re-Frame

The "bending" of light near a massive body is not evidence of "warped nothingness." It is a Refractive Gradient caused by the high-density substrate surrounding a massive energy sink. The Sun acts as a Substrate Lens. Light follows the path of least impedance in a medium where the refractive index \(n\) is a function of the local substrate pressure.

The Consequence

By validating the "Geometric" model through data manipulation, Eddington directed physics away from Mechanical Causality. This led to the modern era of "Dark" fillers; when the lens effect doesn't match the math in deeper space, academia invents "Dark Matter" rather than admitting their geometric focal lengths were wrong from the start.
